Old Sierra Camp opened in October of 1994 with 6
campers and 8 staff members. We had a weekend program at Malakoff State
Park. Two weeks later we held a small family camp.
From that camp came a request for a Home School
Group in March of 1995. Over fifty home-school participants learned about
their pioneer heritage and much enjoyed their experience. Since this camp
was much larger, my parents offered the use of their ranch in Spenceville, where
my great grandparents had come on the trail in 1854. Camps continued on at
the ranch until Fall 1996, when property was purchased just a few miles away
that already had a large log cabin on it.
All programs were moved to the new property in
Spring of 1997. It was so helpful on rough weather days to be able to keep
our new pioneer friends more comfortable. Small buildings and cabins have
been continually built from that time - very much like a fledgling town would
grow.
